Multimedia artist Sergey Katran (b. 1970) lives and works in Moscow. His artworks explore the intersection of art and disciplines such as biology, anthropology, linguistics, quantum physics, astrophysics, and mathematics. Katran creates sculptures, installations, and performances, working both independently and as part of self-organised artist collectives. His works trace the ideas of universal connectedness, non-hermeticity and vulnerability of the world. We met Sergey at his studio and visited the group exhibition “Future of Memories” at the historic Demidov Mansion (a project by MR Group), where some of his works are on display. He spoke to us about his initial discovery of clay as an artistic medium, why he prefers not to be labelled a “science artist,” and the metaphors embedded within his work.
