In his brightly coloured and amusing works Igor Samolet (b. 1984) explores the complex relationships in contemporary life: what is real and virtual, personal and social, public and private. The artist makes textile sculptures and installations from screenshots taken on his own smartphone. His most memorable Facebook statuses, selfies, snapshots and fragments of chats with other people are captured forever.
We filmed Samolet in Moscow’s All-Russian Decorative Art Museum, where he participated in the group show "15 Minute Break", which explores the notion of work. Born in the Komi Republic, the artist talks about his origins in the very North of Russia and how he communicates this part of his identity through his art; his background as a conventional painter and transformation into a contemporary artist.
